Anyone know a good long-term hostel in Auckland?

Postby Lean » Fri Apr 23, 2010 8:41 am

I'm looking for something on the smaller side and cheap. Somewhere people tend to stay for a few months while they are working. Right now I'm in Base and it's just too big and it's not practical to stay here fore a few months. Let me know of any hidden gems. thanks!

One place you could check out is 'Princeton Backpackers'. It's basically a student accomodation block where they rent out any spare accomodation as backpackers. Rooms vary hugely from terrible to great - the first room they'd allocated us was awful, boxy, dingy and dank, so after we whinged they showed us another one which was completely the opposite - Japanese style 3*+ hotel standard in a nice shiny new apartment-style shared area, plasma TV on the wall etc, I couldn't believe it was in the same block. And it was incredible value, I think $45 per night for a private room from what I remember. If you even think of staying here, go and look first and DON'T put any money upfront until you've agreed on a room to stay in - the first room we saw was awful, and I've since heard horror stories from others. But the room we had was great and cheap so could be worth a try.

I just discovered the accommodation pages here on TP, and they're great (broken down by hotel, hostel and B&B).

a friend of mine stayed at ponsonby backpackers on Franklin Road in Ponsonby for quite a while and said it was ok. It's in a good location just off Ponsonby Road and within walking distance to the city.

I have heard good things about Verandah -but... as a long term option, I don't think it would be particularly quiet. It's on quite a busy road, and it's very near to Ponsonby Rd. I know it's close to town, but Mt Eden's not exactly miles out, and it would probably be a much more pleasant place to spend a few months.

hope u like the place..
thanks...
