Istanbul local eats

Postby Brown » Fri Apr 23, 2010 7:53 am

Hello All,I'm an expat living in Istanbul for a few years now. I'm always blown away by the places that the guidebooks recommend for "authentic" Turkish dining. When friends come to visit they always have the same tired old restaurants highlighted in their guidebooks. I've been looking for good independent sources on the subject and came across a site
I've tried a few restaurants they review and was pleasantly surprised to find myself in real local places with unpretentious good food and good prices.
Most recently I went down to Beyoglu to try a Black Sea restaurant called Pera Sisore. It was fabulous! Just a tiny hole in the wall with about 6 options on the menu, including my favorite, hamsi pilavi (sardines over rice).
This is not the kind of food you find in the tourist traps and it'd never make it into the guide books. It does however deserve some attention. Cheers!

Hello,

I was a bit surprised to see my post suspected of being spam. I guess it is because i recommended a website in my post. i was not advertising. that website is a good source of local knowledge and i wanted to share it. if that is considered advertising then what is NOT considered advertising in a forum like this one? then when i write about a good restaurant is that not advertising as well? or when i suggest in a forum that a visit to istanbul is not complete without seeing aya sofia, am i advertising for the ministry of culture? at what point are we shooting ourselves in the foot here by filtering out good useful info because it could somehow benefit someone's business and be understood advertisement?
I am sorry it has come to this and hope you will reconsider.

thanks you,

AC
