travel from North Carolina

Postby Brown » Mon Apr 26, 2010 4:40 am

My son is stationed at Lejeune. I hope to be out there for a week or more just before Christmas. What can a 60 year old mom & her 25 year old son see w/in a couple days drive from LeJeune? Looks like historic US (Penn, NY, Mass) will be too far. Virginia? Ideas? And thanks!

Pat,
Since your son is in the military, perhaps a tour of Civil War sites might be appealing. Try here for a starting point. I have been to several of the Virginia battle sites and enjoyed walking on historic ground. The James River area is also worth a trip. Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown plus the historic plantation homes along the James River make this a memorable day. I was there in the summer, not sure about doing this in the winter.

Another option is to head south and hit Myrtle Beach, Charlestown, Savannah and the islands off the Georgia coast: Sea Island, Jekyll Island, San Simons Island. Or head a bit further south and hit Florida. St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, The Kennedy Space Center. That is a warmer option than Virginia in Dec. Hope this helps with your planning.

Colonial Williamburg would be on my list too. However heading south and going to Charleston is great or out to Raleigh/Durham and the research triangle is really nice too. Its a bit cold for the outer banks but if you don't mind that there are some lovely lighthouses some good birdwatching oportunities as well as some good fishing and scuba diving. Of course you need to sample many of the different styles of Carolina BBQ.

Savannah is pretty too but I'd head to Charleston if it was me.
