Vaccinations for Peru

Postby Andi » Mon Apr 26, 2010 5:11 am

My husband and I are going on our honeymoon to Peru for 14 days. Peru for Less is the company that we're using, and we've been pleased with them so far. However, they seem not to be very knowledgable about the shots we need to have in order to be safe. A travel doctor says we need yellow fever, Hep A and B, tetanus and typhoid. My soon to be husband says that we don't need vaccinations since we're not going into the jungle. He's thinking all we need is something for the altitude. Does anyone have suggestions? These shots would be over $500 for each one of us!!!! Thanks for any help!

Hello guys, it′s nice to chech this kind of ingormation. Ok, I′ll help you...

I work in tourism and I have my own company.

I′ve traveled around Peru a lot. And I now every part of my country very well.

1. You need yellow fever if you travel to the jungle. Tha′s the case of Peru, Brasil, Bolivia and others countries where you can find jungle.

2. I dont undestand why typhoid and Hep A and B?

3. Most of the doctors says that to get MONEY, and really US$ 500.00 is too much money.

4. Your soon to be husband says the correct if you dont go to the jungle, you dont need yellow fever.

So, GOOD TRIP, If you want to know local people in Peru, write me... it would be amazing.

If stringschi is in the US, then that price for all of the vaccinations they are recommending would be about right. We don't have travel clinics or programs that offer cheap/free immunizations. Our vaccinations for Hep A&B and tetanus were right around $250/ person. That included 2 Hep A, 3 Hep B and 1 tetanus for me though beerman got to skip 2 of the Hep B since he'd been vaccinated through work a couple of years earlier. (Sorry to digress...)

I agree with Marlis and get the Hep A&B and Tetanus. Hep A is contracted through food, water and a few other means. Hep B associated more with medical procedures and contact with infected blood/bodily fluids. You could skip that one. Tetanus is everywhere in the world and definitely worth the innoculation.

For more info on all three diseases and vaccinations:

Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B
Tetanus

Hi,

Just been to Peru in April. Neither of those vaccinations were obligatory at that time, and most of them are for the jungle part of the country. However we chose the 'better to be safe than sorry' way having the Yellow Fever, Hepa A+B and Tetanus shots.
They weren't cheap, but though I'm not familiar with US prices, $500 seems quite high.

Hepa A+B can be advisable however not just for Peru, but all'round the world, and as we saw quite a lot of abandoned dogs along the way, tetanus can be considered as well.

Shots might be expensive, but they give protection for 10 years, so it's not just for your next trip.

Enjoy Peru :)
